His Excellency the Mayor of Beit Jala, Issa Al-Qassis, and a team of municipal employees met with Eng. Basel Yassin, Director General of the Energy and Environment Research Center, Eng. Nidal Abu Al-Rub, Director of the Research and Studies Unit, Eng. Walaa Saleh, Electrical and Environmental Engineer, and Ms. Ahlam Al-Khatib, Communications Manager at the Energy and Natural Resources Authority, with the aim of shedding light on the project to develop the city’s street lighting network using energy-saving LED units, which was implemented by the municipality and covered 60% of the city’s streets with funding from the German government and support from the Bergisch Gladbach Municipality, which is twinned with the municipality. The mechanism of cooperation between the municipality and the Energy Authority in the field of renewable energy and the use of LED lamps for street lighting was discussed.
In this regard, it was agreed to implement awareness campaigns with a group of local experts in this field and under the auspices of the Energy and Natural Resources Authority.
The Energy and Natural Resources Authority staff expressed their happiness with the implementation of the project and reviewed its success stories in 11 governorates in the country and its positive effects in improving the environmental situation in the city, especially since traditional lamps containing sodium, which in turn negatively affects the environment, are being disposed of, in addition to many other benefits of the project.
